Hello Ann-Marie, how long have you worked at Fostering Options?
What is your current role and why did you choose this job?
I work in the Administration team within the Milton Keynes Fostering Options office.
My job allows me to continue developing my skills within administration and provides me with the experience of working in a fast-paced office. I wanted a rewarding job within the children’s sector and this was a perfect choice – I feel I have made a positive difference for children and it has been more rewarding working for Fostering Options than it was when I worked within the education sector for 10 years.
Did you need to study for your role? If so what did you study?
No administrative qualifications as such, I already held administration positions prior to working with Fostering Options.
What do you love about your job?
All of it!! – Dealing with new scenarios every day, I love the team I work for, the fast pace of referrals and the joy of making a placement. I also help with the creative side of newsletters/social events for carers/etc.
What is the hardest part of your job?
Dealing with the emotional side of referrals and learning to not get emotionally involved. Please provide an example of your happiest working memory.
There are so many but the one that sticks out in my mind is when I went from a temporary contract to being made a permanent member of the team. Definitely a happy day.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of fostering?
If you like a challenge, making a difference and reaping the emotional rewards, fostering is the way forward. It may be tough at times, however, stick with it! The end results are definitely worth it. Seeing the difference you, as foster carers, make to the children and young people over time and the individuals of society they turn out to be…it should make you feel proud as you achieved it and helped them grow through support, guidance and persistence. Remember, it won’t always go to plan, but you are making a tremendous difference to that child or young person never-the-less.
What qualities do you think a person needs to be successful in a role like yours?
Understanding, calm natured, humorous (sometimes you need to laugh or you’ll cry :0) ) patient, organised and be able to prioritise and be good at making tea and coffee.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of entering a similar profession to you?
You will love it, something new every day and a team that provide support and guidance…even when you are acting like you understand.
You will find some cases distressing and upsetting, however, there are people everywhere in the company you can talk to about it and they will take the time to listen.
I left a school 2 years ago and have never looked back once!!
